Happy Thanksgiving!

Linda and I want to wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving. Even in these challenging times we have so much to be thankful for. We live in a great country that provides us with opportunities. We live in a great community that appreciates diversity and values all lives. We enjoy our family and friends, and even though we can not be close to them this year, we hold them close in our hearts.

Thanksgiving message with pumpkins on a blue background

Linda and I are giving thanks for you, our readers. We appreciate that you take the time to read the blotter and that you are as eager to learn about real estate as Linda and I are eager to share.

There will not be a market activity report this week. Next week’s report will combine two weeks: last week and this.

Enjoy the holiday!

A Tribute

Today I want to share with you something personal, and yes, it does have to do with real estate. You see, my Mom passed away on October 16th. If you have ever worked with me, you’ve heard me talk about my Mom. So this isn’t new to you. But if you haven’t worked with me, I feel a need to tell you about the best Realtor I have ever known.

My Mom got her real estate license in 1976. She was raised in an era when she wanted to major in business at Oregon State, but as a woman she had to major in “Secretarial Sciences”. Seriously. But she had a head for business. She hung her license at Shelter Properties on Boones Ferry Rd in Lake Grove. There she got her feet on the ground and at one time, after listing an entire new subdivision, got chewed out for besting a more prominent agent, a bit of a diva, for beating her out with most new listings for the month.

She moved on to Professionals 100. In 1987, after the birth of my daughter, I was agonizing over having to put my baby into daycare 5 days a week. I had a back ground in sales. I had actually been a sales trainer for a health club organization. My Mom’s business was booming. She was the leading sales agent in the metro area for Great Western Savings and Loan. She was handling their foreclosure properties and she had just been handed about 20 properties to list and sell. She needed help. She called me up and asked if, perhaps, my husband would consider coming to work for her. My reaction? My husband, what about me? That’s when I started my real estate career. It was 33 years ago. I’ve never looked back.

At first, I was her assistant. As I gained experience, we became a team. Then, as she approached retirement, she became my assistant. It’s probably the best possible circumstance in which to be in this business. You see, real estate has a lot of moving parts. So many people are involved: the buyer, the seller, the inspector, the appraiser, the lender. This means that it’s complicated and no two transactions are the same. As Realtors, we need sounding boards, people we respect and rely on to help us navigate complex circumstances so that we can give our clients the best advice possible, for their benefit, not for out own.

About the time that my Mom retired, I met Linda. She and I have known each other for at least 15 years. She calls me, I call her, she filled that void that opened up when my Mom retired. I don’t know how anyone can be in this business without a confidant.

So yes, I’m grieving. But I’m grateful. How lucky am I to have had Mom who, along with giving me life and raising me, gave me a career?

Today I want to salute my Mom. Oh what a wonderful woman she was!

Dianne

Babica Hen

Babica Hen 001Lake Oswego enjoys several really nice breakfast restaurants. The fresh pastries and fluffy omelets at La Provence are legendary. St. Honore opened next to Millennium Plaza Park recently, bringing amazing Croque Messieurs and Croque Madames (yum!), but these two fine establishments are now going to have some fierce competition. Babica Hen is in town.

Located next to Gubanc’s (at 15964 Boones Ferry Rd), it’s right in the heart of downtown Lake Grove.

The owner’s are the same people who own Gubanc’s, which is pretty much a restaurant institution here in LO. So it makes sense that they know what they’re doing. Whereas Gubanc’s is more of a lunch and dinner restaurant, Babica Hen specializes in breakfast with a few lunch options.

The menu is amazing. Le Waffle Lyonnaise (black forest ham, egg, arugula, and tarragon hollondaise), the Lemon Berry Crumble Waffle (Amaretto blueberries, lemon marscarpone, and brown sugar crumble), 3 different eggs Benedicts (tomato, smoked pork, and dungeness crab), prawns and polenta, and the well-named Iron Miner’s Breakfast (potato hash, eggs, roasted tomato, carmelized onion, cheddar, chorizo gravy, bacon AND maple sausage), are just a sampling. Seriously, the menu is huge and creative.

Babica Hen 002Prices are reasonable with waffles at $9, the Iron Miner’s Breakfast at $11, and the most expensive thing on the menu for $13 being Champagne Oysters (yes, this is what I had, fantastic).

Are you hungry yet?

I highly recommend giving Babica Hen a try. Be prepared to wait. The parking lot is pretty much packed, but the kitchen is efficient and service is quick. Last Sunday at 10am, my wait was about 15 minutes.

Hours are Tuesday thru Sunday from 7am to 3pm, closed on Mondays.

Enjoy!
Dianne

A New Year!

Oswego-LakeGreetings to all of our loyal and new Property Blotter readers!

As we enter our 5th year of publishing this insiders’ look at the Lake Oswego community and Real Estate scenes, we want to take a moment to thank you so much for your interest and patronage through the years! Dianne and I are as committed as ever to bringing you the micro-focused real estate information you count on, and also the perspective of Lake Oswego as part of the larger Portland Metro Area from time to time. Context is good… at least we think so : )

We both specialize in Lake Oswego property, considering the time we’ve spent living and working here, and we both also have been working all over the Greater Portland Area for many, many years, so please remember us if you know someone who needs a really experienced and reliable Realtor for any property “selling or buying adventure” in this larger geographic area!

Though our lives have changed through the years, the Property Blotter has remained constant, and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do. Recently we have made one BIG change, and that is that we are now working with Oregon First Real Estate Company!  A change like this is the kind of thing that only occurs once in a very great while, and while we have been very pleased with our previous affiliation and will miss those with whom we’ve worked closely for some time, we are thrilled to be joining this vibrant, established local company with offices all over the Portland area and Vancouver!

Just for fun, I’ve pasted below our very first post from 2008, and after reading it, am feeling both nostalgic, and satisfied with the work we’ve committed ourselves to, and all we’ve accomplished with so many of you.

Happy New Year to each of you…. We toast YOU in 2013!

Welcome to the premier edition of the Property Blotter!

This blog is intended to be a fun and useful forum pertaining to real estate issues in the City of Lake Oswego. It will bring you information that directly reflects current market conditions.

It will also provide you with history of the area and insights into Lake Oswego’s vibrant community. You will find plenty of statistics and details about houses currently for sale and recently sold. You will also find neighborhood profiles and featured homes. And, yes, you’ll get commentary on local events and neighborhood happenings.

What you will not find is endless self-promotion and unneeded advertising. This is going to be a place to learn about Lake Oswego real estate and not a place that will waste your time. We don’t care for that sort of thing any more than you do.

And just who are we and why do we have any right to be doing this? We are Realtors who have each lived in Lake Oswego for some time and have been directly a part of this community. Between us we have 30 years of experience selling real estate in this fine community. Between us we have lived in Lake Oswego for 20 years. Our children have attended school here. We participated in sports here. We volunteered with local non-profits here. We know this town.

Lake Oswego is an amazing place to live. It is also seriously misunderstood. Yes, there are million-dollar homes in Lake Oswego. But more than money, Lake Oswego is a town that has people who care. It has always had great schools and so attracts families looking for excellent public schools. There are modest homes as well as lakeside estates.

If we are doing our job right, you’ll come away from this blog feeling like you know a bit more about what prices of homes are like, what is going on with local businesses, and what it is about LO that makes it a great place to live and to work. If you currently live here, you’ll know more about what your home may be worth. If you are thinking about moving here, you’ll know more about what to expect when you buy a home and what this community is like as a place to live.

So come along with us on this “blog-mobile”. It is going to be a great journey.
